History: Mirjan Fort, popularly referred to as the “Rani Chennamma Fort,” is an important historical site in Karnataka. Built in the sixteenth century, the fort provided the Vijayanagara Empire’s emperors with a tactical stronghold. Later, Queen Chennamma of Kittur, who vehemently opposed British colonization in the 18th century, extended and refurbished it. The fort was a formidable bastion because of its robust construction and advantageous placement along the banks of the Aganashini River.
